The Lack Of RSVPs

Have you ever planned a party and found yourself unable to get people to RSVP to your invitations? This is a common problem and unfortunately there is little that you can do about it as the host. An RSVP is often requested by a host for a number of reasons. Usually, this is the hosts way of knowing how many people will attend and what special circumstances they need accommodated. You need to know who is coming. After all, how do you know how many meals to prepare and how many gift bags to prepare?
While it is frustrating when individuals do not let you know if they are coming or not, you can get around this. For example, some people have changed what they include on the invitation. For example, instead of saying RSVP, you may instead want just those guests who will not be able to attend to let you know. In other words, if they do not call, you are assuming that they will be there. Anyone that does not show up and does not call is risking the next event that you are hosting!
For some parties this is not appropriate since you really need to know how many will be attending, such as for a formal get together. In this situation, the only option for the host is to give each individual a call to find out if they will be attending. If you do not feel comfortable with doing this or you do not think you have the time to manage it, you may be able to ask a friend or family member to handle the task for you. This is often the best route to go since most guests do not want to disappoint their hosts by saying no to them.
Make RSVP's easy for guests, too. Be sure to include a card that allows them to check yes or no and write the number of guests attending on a line. Include an envelope with your name and address on it with a stamp and let them send back the RSVP cards. This way, there is little excuse for not communicating with you about their attendance.
Even when all these measures are taken, you may find that some people still fail to pull it all together and communicate with you. When this happens, it is essential to just take a deep breath and realize there is just little that you can do.
