In Lieu of Gifts

Have you ever wanted to host a special birthday party or a unique retirement party but you really did not want your guests to feel like they had to bring gifts? This is often an important consideration for those who are attending. In some cases, people feel it is necessary to spend a good deal of money on a gift for those who are important to them. The problem with this is that most gifts are not going to be usable or may not really hit home with the recipient. Should you, as the host of the party, request that no gifts are being given? You may want to do just that!
There are some occasions when gifts are an important part of the party. For example, if friends and family are coming over to celebrate a young child's birthday, chances are good they will look forward to heading to the store to find a special gift that is sure to impress that child. In this situation, the last thing you want to do is to tell people that they should not bring gifts. They want to see your child on their special day and they want to make them happy, too. Let them do so.
In other situations, however, it may not be appropriate or appreciated. Instead, there are several options for you to consider. For example, you may want to set up a special message on the invitations that you send out that lets everyone know that gifts are not necessary and that they do not need to be brought. This takes the pressure off of you while allowing those guests who feel like they should bring something the ability to do so.
Another option is to consider a special gift that may be larger. For example, perhaps you are throwing a retirement party for your parents and you know that they would really like a week away on a cruise. In the surprise invitations that you send to your guests, you can request no gifts but if individuals do want to provide something they can chip in for a cruise that is being given by those who are invited to the party.
Take some time to consider if it is necessary to say anything at all. If your guests want to bring a plate of bakery or gifts are not usually brought, then by all means do not tell them not to.
