Managing Food Preparation For Your Event

There are so many things to do when you are making a meal for a larger group of people. To be the perfect host, you also have to spend at least some of your time out with guests, socializing with them. How can you find the time to socialize and greet people if you are in the kitchen trying to make meals for them? This balance is really what defines a successful host with someone who is just an amateur chef. If you want to do well here, you have to learn to manage food preparation around your event.
Start with planning a menu that allows you to spend time with your guests. If you are possibly going to be successful, you will need a menu that is simple enough that you can easily prepare within a limited amount of time. You also need a menu that can be made in stages and held nicely. For example, if you plan to poach an egg for each person, this will take much longer than preparing a dish of scrambled eggs that everyone can serve themselves from. Find dishes that are impressive as you would like them to be, but still large enough to go into a serving dish.
Next, try to make as much of the food in advance as possible. It is not always possible to make this happen, but there are ways to maximize the process. Start with the protein since it often takes the longest to cook. Use a large roaster or a slow cooker to help to cook the food to a very fork tender stage but over a long period. It will seem like you spent days over the stove when all you did was throw it together and forget about it. Next, consider prep work like cutting and pealing vegetables. This can be done the day before, in most cases, and food can be stored in air tight containers in the refrigerator. You can breads in the morning while most deserts are often better tasting when they are away in the refrigerator for a few hours to set up.
When it comes to managing food prep for your event, the best tool you have is a step by step plan. A few days in advance finalize your menu and write out plan. Do as much as you can in advance so you do not have to rush through it later.
